Study Abroad Cost: 9-Country Annual Budget Comparison
Compare annual tuition, living costs and degree length across nine destinations, from Germany and the UK to North America, Australia and New Zealand.
Quick answer: how much does a bachelor’s degree abroad cost per year?
Compare tuition and normal living costs together. For one international undergraduate without a scholarship, current non-clinical planning figures are:
DestinationTuition + normal living each year
Germany, public university €12,000–€18,000
United Kingdom £22,000–£75,000
Ireland €23,000–€45,000
Netherlands €21,000–€38,000
Italy, public to private €11,000–€30,000
United States US$51,000–US$105,000
Canada C$42,000–C$75,000
Australia A$68,000–A$90,000
New Zealand NZ$52,000–NZ$80,000
The UK and US upper figures are high-cost examples, not national averages. Cambridge’s published non-clinical tuition, college fee and 12-month living estimate can approach £75,000. A high-cost US private university can exceed US$100,000 before aid.
These figures are a starting budget. Add any university-specific health cover, student-service or course fee that is not included, then add first-year visa, flight and rental-deposit costs. Medicine, dentistry and other clinical degrees can cost much more.
Degree length changes the final bill: many UK, Dutch and Italian bachelors take three years; US and Canadian degrees commonly take four; a foundation or other preparation year adds another year of tuition and living costs.
